September 20th is the Conservation Fair at Cawthra Mulock Reserve in Newmarket

(TORONTO, September 2, 2009) - For the first time on Sunday, September 20th, Ontario Nature’s Cawthra Mulock Nature Reserve in Newmarket will play host to a fun-filled, hands-on, activity-packed Conservation Fair. Children, families and nature lovers alike can learn together about conserving biodiversity, improving habitats for birds, protecting species and fighting climate change at this event sponsored by Ontario Nature and OPG Biodiversity 2009.

WHEN: Sunday, September 20, 2009 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

WHAT: “Conservation Fair”

  • Stream rehab! Find out how to keep watersheds healthy, streams clean
  • Raptor alert! Meet a turkey vulture, great-horned owl, broad-winged hawk, peregrine falcon and red-tailed hawk courtesy of Wildlife Education and Environmental Programs (WEEP), University of Guelph
  • Tweet this! Build bird nesting boxes for tree-swallows and bluebirds, learn about the challenges faced by cavity-nesting birds
  • Guided walks (on the hour) to identify trees, plant native species, maintain trails
  • Nature crafts for children

WHERE: Cawthra Mulock Nature Reserve, 18462 Bathurst Street in Newmarket just north of Green Lane/Millers Sideroad.

OPG Biodiversity 2009 is a series of province-wide conservation-focused, family-friendly action and education events sponsored by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) in partnership with Ontario Nature, LEAF (Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests) and the Bruce Trail Conservancy. Its goal is to get people involved in protecting and conserving biodiversity in our urban parklands and forest ecosystems. Biodiversity 2009 builds on OPG’s commitment to conserving, sustaining and protecting nature.
