Earth Rangers knows kids have the power to change the world. They teach them to be an important part of the solution to environmental issues. By combining kids’ passion for animals and the environment with their love of entertainment, they’ve inspired millions of kids to become environmental stewards.
One particular initiative is Earth Rangers’ Bring Back the Wild American Badger project, which OPG is proud to sponsor.
The American Badger is one of the rarest and most elusive mammals in Ontario. Today, there are fewer than 200 living in just two isolated populations in southwestern and northwestern Ontario. American badgers that are left must ‘compete’ with humans to find food and a place to live. These changes to the landscape also affect other animals, which reduces the available prey for the American badger to hunt.
Badger habitat is also becoming increasingly fragmented by roads, and badgers are sometimes killed by cars while trying to cross a road that passes through their habitat. To help the badger, we really need to conserve habitat so that they have a place to live, hunt, and find mates. Unfortunately, we know little about them because they are so reclusive. Learning more about the American badger and its habitat will help us better understand what threatens their population.
